Bilt 2.0: How to Subsidize Your Housing with Rewards
Bilt lets you earn points on rent - one of the few ways to get real value from your biggest monthly expense. Here's how to actually use it.
π¨ Update: Jan 22, 2026
Bilt recently disclosed the operational details for 2026 Bilt Cash redemptions. While the potential annual value is significant, much of it is distributed through monthly credits with specific category caps, such as $10 for pharmacy purchases and $25 for dining.
Option 2 (the 4% Bilt Cash setting) remains the most flexible configuration, provided the user is willing to manage these monthly redemptions.
Choose your rewards
You can switch between two reward settings every month. Both let you pay for your housing with no fees, but they earn rewards differently.
Option 1: Earn Points
- Points on Rent: Earn points automatically on every rent payment.
- No Cash Back: You wonβt earn the 4% Bilt Cash on your other spending.
- Spend Requirements: Your earning rate depends on how much you spend outside of rent.
Best For: People who spend less each month and want a simple setup.
*Earning rate based on non-rent spend relative to rent amount.
Option 2: Earn Bilt Cash
Find this in: Bilt App > Card > Settings
- 4% Bilt Cash: Earn cash on everything you buy (except rent).
- Flexibility: Use your cash to pay your rent or mortgage.
- Manual Action: You have to apply the credit to your payment yourself.
Best For: High-spenders who want to save the most money on housing.
How Bilt Cash works
Bilt Cash is a separate reward you earn on top of your points. It replaces the old milestone system and gives you a direct credit to your account.
Application as a housing subsidy
I use this for my mortgage - itβs one of the only cards that lets you earn anything on that payment. Bilt Cash can also cover dining, travel, or fitness credits, but applying it to housing is where the math works out best.
By selecting Option 2 (4% Bilt Cash) and applying the accumulated credits directly to a rent or mortgage payment, the card effectively provides a 4% discount on the userβs primary monthly expense.
Secondary redemption options
If you donβt pay housing costs directly, Bilt Cash still covers several monthly credits - dining, travel, fitness. Each has a monthly cap, so the value is real but bounded.
π½οΈ Discretionary Spending
Credits for food and pharmacy services.
βοΈ Travel & Wellness
Credits for travel and fitness expenses.
β οΈ The Rules
- Internal Only: Bilt Cash stays in the Bilt app. You cannot transfer it to airlines or hotels.
- It Expires: You must use your credits by the end of the year they were earned.
Is the fee worth it?
The Break-Even Math
The card pays for itself if you use enough credits to cover the $495 annual fee.
Comparative analysis
Quantifying the configuration choice
Selecting Option 1 in favor of convenience results in a measurable loss of potential yield. For every $1,000 of non-rent spend, the choice of Option 2 preserves significant capital that would otherwise be foregone.
Hardware and annual fees
The effectiveness of this rewards system depends largely on the selected hardware. The Palladium and Blue versions cater to different spending volumes.

1. Liquidity Baseline
Goal: Maintain a liquid cash back return on dining and travel expenses.
2. Rewards Acceleration
Goal: Use Bilt Cash to knock down your monthly housing costs.
β οΈ Critical Configuration
The 4% Bilt Cash return is only available if Option 2 is selected in the application settings.
The baseline: Apply your Bilt Cash credits to rent or mortgage each month - thatβs the move that keeps the rewards from expiring unused.
Decide on your tier (Blue vs. Palladium) and ensure you toggle 'Option 2' in your Bilt settings to unlock the 4% Bilt Cash yield.
