WiiM Pro Plus Review: The "Chromecast Audio" for Audiophiles
For years, we've had to choose between cheap Bluetooth adapters or expensive systems like Sonos. The WiiM Pro Plus finally fills the gap.
If you have a nice pair of powered speakers or a vintage stereo receiver, getting Spotify or Tidal onto them is surprisingly annoying. For years, we've had to choose between cheap Bluetooth adapters or expensive systems like Sonos. The WiiM Pro Plus finally fills that gap.
Setup and connectivity
At roughly $220, this thing is a steal. It's a small plastic puck that acts as the brain for your stereo. I plugged it into my powered speakers via RCA cables, connected it to WiFi in 30 seconds, and boom: I now have a smart stereo with lossless quality.
DAC performance and audio quality
The Pro Plus uses a premium AKM DAC chip. In plain English, this means it converts digital files into analog sound with incredible precision. The soundstage is wider and the separation is clearer than the standard model. If you are plugging this directly into an amp, the "Plus" upgrade is absolutely worth the extra money.
Software and app integration
Hardware is easy; software is hard. This is where most cheap streamers fail. The WiiM Home app is shockingly good—it's fast, stable, and unifies all your music sources. But you don't even have to use it; it supports AirPlay 2, Chromecast, and Spotify Connect natively.
✅ The Good
- Bit-perfect audio support (192kHz/24-bit)
- Incredible value compared to Sonos or BlueSound
- Excellent app and wide connectivity options
- Compact, discreet design
❌ The Bad
- Build quality feels light and plastic-y
- No USB audio output
- Included cables are a bit basic
The bottom line: Should you buy it?
If you want to add modern streaming to an old stereo, or if you want better sound quality than Bluetooth can offer, the WiiM Pro Plus is the answer. It is the spiritual successor to the beloved Chromecast Audio, but on steroids.
